Message to London Metropolitan University Students
Many of you may have become aware of the discussions between London Metropolitan University and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the body responsible for distributing public money to universities. These discussions concern matters relating to the level of funding the University has received from HEFCE since 2005/6.
Last year the University was advised that HEFCE would reduce the teaching grant it gives to London Met by a minimum of £15 million per annum from 2008/9 onwards, and more recently we have learnt that HEFCE is also likely to seek to recover an overpayment of funding it gave the University between 2005 and 2008. The exact amount to be repaid and the period over which it will need to repaid will not be known until the end of February.
This reduction in the University’s future annual income means that we have no option but to reduce our costs. We have announced that the University will be making a reduction in the number of staff it employs, as well as reducing non-staff related costs. In due course a formal consultation process will be undertaken with the University’s recognised trades unions.
In identifying the cost savings to be made, our prime consideration is to ensure our continued ability to deliver a high quality education to all current and future students. Therefore, while I cannot yet give you the detail of the reductions in staff nor the aspects of the University’s costs which, at this time, we will be reducing, I can commit that London Met will continue to deliver excellent educational services to enable all our students - current and future - to achieve their potential. I intend that all current students will be able to finish their courses/studies with the University.
London Met’s courses have been awarded the highest quality rating by the UK Higher Education Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), as well as receiving accreditation from the US Middle States Commission on Higher Education and successful evaluation by the European University Association. Our courses are also accredited by a wide range of professional bodies. In the recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008), London Met was ranked in the top half of ‘research power’ rankings of all UK universities. We are very proud of these marks of confidence in the quality of the education we provide and have no intention of allowing these standards to slip.
London Metropolitan University continues to work with HEFCE to resolve these funding issues and I commit to keeping university staff, unions and students up to date as the detail of the situation becomes clearer.
